Mission
The National Library of Medicine is the world’s largest medical Library and a national resource for health professionals, scientists, and the public. Housed within the library are 6 million items, including one of the world’s finest medical history collections of old and rare medical works. Vigorous programs of research and development are carried out by the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications (LHNCBC) and the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). LHNCBC explores new technology to advance the dissemination, organization, and utilization of biomedical information. NCBI is a recognized leader in computational molecular biology, and is also developing innovative computer solutions for management and dissemination of human genome information. Biomedical science information through NLM generated databases, including MEDLINE®, MEDLINEplus®, PubMed®, and ClinicalTrials.gov, continue to be used extensively by investigators, educators, physicians and the public throughout the world.
